Volunteer Engineering Roles - Front Eng, Backend, DevOpsSRE

United States

Volunteer

Remote

About the Role

We are looking for engineering volunteers to help build a high-impact, two-sided platform from the ground up in time for our cohort launch in August. The project is focused on building user-centered experience to foster a sense of community and belonging.

How This Roles Supports the Organization

What We Are Building

We are developing a two-sided platform from scratch that bridges the gap between our members and our

operational staff. The project is split into two core components:

1. The Member App

A consumer-facing mobile/web application designed for supplementing our in person programming, staying

connected with the community, and communication with our Care team.

  • Key Features: Interacting with multimedia content, chat, progress tracking, video calls, and more.

  • Tech Focus: Built using a modern reactive framework with Flutter/Dart.

2. Staff Web Tools

A robust, secure backend administrative dashboard and suite of web-based internal tools that empower our

staff to manage operations seamlessly. This includes managing caseloads, scheduling video calls,

uploading/organizing multimedia content, and more.

  • Key Features: Member management database, data filtering/reporting, content management tools, operational workflows, and access control.

  • Tech Focus: Built using Go with high-performance relational (PostgreSQL) database, with an emphasis on speed and clean data management.

What You'll Do

1. Frontend Engineer (Volunteer)

The Role

You will focus on building user-centered, consumer-facing interfaces from scratch. You’ll help create seamless

user experiences, focusing heavily on features focused on creating a sense of community and belonging.

Skills & Tech Stack:

  • Core: Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and a modern reactive framework (e.g., React, Next.js, or Vue).

  • Product Focus: Experience or strong interest in building consumer-facing apps (optimizing for user flows, onboarding, and engagement).

  • AI Tooling: Comfortable using or willing to learn AI tools (like Claude Code or Cursor AI) to accelerate software development.

  • Nice-to-Have: Experience with Flutter and Dart is highly desirable for our mobile roadmap.

2. Backend Engineer (Volunteer)

The Role

You will be responsible for building the robust, scalable systems that power our application. You will handle API

design, business logic, and database management, ensuring everything runs smoothly under the hood.

Skills & Tech Stack:

  • Core: Strong proficiency in Go for server-side development.

  • Databases: Experience working with relational (PostgreSQL) database.

  • AI Tooling: Comfortable using or willing to learn AI tools (like Claude Code or Cursor AI) to accelerate software development and documentation workflows.

3. Ongoing DevOps & Infrastructure Operations/Site Reliability Engineering (Volunteer)

The Role

Initially the SRE will help develop the CI/CD pipeline and support our software engineers.  Once the Member App and Staff Web Tools are live, our DevOps focus will transition into keeping the ecosystem stable, secure, and cost-effective as our user base scales.

Ongoing responsibilities will include:

  • Observability & Alerting: Maintaining automated monitoring tools (e.g., AWS CloudWatch, Datadog, or Grafana) to track application health, database CPU usage, and API latencies, ensuring we catch errors before our members do.

  • Cost Optimization & Scaling: Keeping our cloud infrastructure lean. You will monitor resource utilization and adjust auto-scaling rules for our databases (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB/Firestore) so we only pay for what we use.

  • Security & Patch Management: Automating dependency updates, managing SSL/TLS certificates, running routine security vulnerability scans, and ensuring access controls (IAM) remain tight.

  • Backup & Disaster Recovery: Overseeing automated backup routines for our relational and NoSQL databases, and periodically testing recovery workflows to ensure zero data loss.

  • Developer Experience (DX) Support: Refining the CI/CD pipeline as the development team grows, ensuring that frontend and backend engineers can continue to test and deploy features smoothly using their AI workflows.

What You Bring

What We're Looking For

We are looking for team members who don’t just want to write code, but want to build a culture we can all be proud of. We are guided by a few core values, and we look for these qualities in everyone who joins us:

  • Impact-Driven Intent: You genuinely care about the mission. You are motivated by the knowledge that the code you write directly improves the lives of our members and empowers our staff.

  • Radical Collaboration & Humility: We build together. You value diverse perspectives, enjoy constructive feedback, and communicate with empathy and kindness. There is no room for ego here - just a shared goal to build something great.

  • Ownership & Integrity: Because we work asynchronously, trust is our backbone. You take true pride in your work, follow through on your commitments, and proactively communicate if life gets busy and you need to step back.

  • Continuous Learning & Adaptability: Building from scratch means navigating a dynamic, evolving landscape. You view technical challenges as opportunities to grow, and you love experimenting with new ways of working (like AI-forward development).

  • Inclusion & Belonging: We are building a welcoming space for developers of various backgrounds to contribute, learn, and thrive. You believe in creating an accessible, supportive, and inclusive environment for the entire team.

What Success Looks Like

Why Join Our Journey

  • Build for Human Flourishing: You will get to build a product that is designed throughout to help people thrive - instead of building for digital engagement of likes and time spent.

  • Build from Scratch: You will get to build systems from the ground up, providing incredible portfolio pieces and resume-building experience.

  • AI-Forward Workflow: We embrace tools like Claude Code or Cursor AI and LLMs to build faster and smarter - perfect for developers looking to master AI-driven development.

  • Collaborative Environment: Work alongside a supportive team, share knowledge across the stack, and use your skills for a great cause.

Role Arrangements

  • Flexible Commitment: We are asking for a commitment of at least 5–10 hours per week for 3 months, completely asynchronous and tailored to your schedule.
